 What is a firewall?

 Do I need a firewall?

Here is a quick Firewall Needs Assessment. If you agree with any of the statements below, you need a firewall.

  • I want my computer(s) to run predictably.
  • I have some data on my computer that I do not want to loose, and I want to know that the information has not been changed without my knowledge.
  • I have data stored on my computer that I do not want exposed to strangers. (If you have entered a credit card number into a web page at some time, there is a good chance it was saved at least momentarily on your hard drive, and it is still there.)

Most attacks do not target a specific computer. It is a common strategy to look effectively randomly at computers connected to the Internet, and try to comunicate with them, put files on them, pull information from them, etc.

Spyware and Adware are terms for a class of software that has the intent of tracking your computer usage, and either reporting it (spyware,) or selecting and presenting advertisments based on that information (adware.) Back to Top

 How do I know if adware or spyware is installed on my system?

Common symptoms of adware and spyware are slow system response, and a proliferation of windows appearing even when you have not clicked a hyperlink on a web page. As it's name implies, spyware often exhibits no sings that is is operating. Running software designed to detect it may be the only way to find it.

 What is a Computer Virus?

A computer virus is a piece of software developed primarily to compromise a computer resource. A virus installs itself without the user's permission or knowledge. Many viruses do not exhibit any symptoms. Others make you system "act funny." The only way to tell for sure is to use software designed to check for an infection.
